Butterfly Gardening is so much fun!
It's a great distraction in these stessful times!
Butterflies and moths make up a large group of insects known as the Order Lepidoptera (lep-i-DOP-ter-ah). The name—from the Greek lepido, "scale," and ptera, "wings"—refers to a prominent feature of adult butterflies and moths, the tiny scales that cover the wings and the rest of the body.
Several years ago, while visiting my kids in NYC, we spent the day at the Natural History Museum. I discovered The Butterfly Conservatory and was smitten. When we returned home to Sarasota, my research and planning began to create my own butterfly habitat garden. I have always loved gardening, but since moving to Florida from Ohio I have found it to be a challenge. Planting a butterfly garden proved to be the perfect solution for my gardening "bug."
I've spent many hours researching what plants work best for Florida. I also needed to make sure the deer and bunnies wouldn't eat them. I quickly discovered that one of my favorites, Zinnias, are also a bunny's delight. I have had great success though with many others, though, including Bee Balm, Milkweed, Hollyhock, Fennel, Phlox, Almond Bush, and Fire Bush. I love going to the nurseries here and learning about new pollinators. In these stressful times, I find my gardens provide a great distraction! One more thing, the bees love it too!
