Commonly called clownfish, this photo is actually of a Blue stripped anemonefish. (all clownfish are anemonefish, but all anemonefish aren’t clownfish) Anemonefish are native to warmer waters of the Indian and Pacific oceans, including the Great Barrier Reef and the Red Sea. While most species have restricted distributions, others are widespread. There are no anemonefish in the AtlanticOcean or the Caribbean Sea.
Anemonefish are specialized damselfish and live a symbiotic relationship with various anemones. There are over 30 species of anemonefish. They are rarely found very far away from an anemone.
Being damselfish, they are fun to photograph as they are aggressive protectors of their territory. As you approach, they attack the camera lens. Swooping in and out of their anemone. Luckily they grow no bigger than 6 inches, if they did, they would be the most dangerous fish in the sea
